Tiger Woods Confirms Quail

The world’s top golfer, Tiger Woods, committed Friday to play in next week’s Quail Hollow Championship in Charlotte.

It’s his first appearance here since winning the PGA Tour event in 2007. Last year, Woods missed the tournament after suffering a knee injury.

This marks Woods’ fourth appearance at the Charlotte event since its inception in 2003. Adding Woods means an instant sales jump for the tournament in a year when organizers could use a boost. Tickets for the third round next Saturday are sold out but tickets remain for the other three rounds as well as the practice rounds.

“We are very happy to have Tiger coming back,” tournament executive director Kym Hougham says in a prepared statement. “With the exception of Joey Sindelar, who has moved on to the Champions Tour, we have all of our past champions returning. The patrons and the community of Charlotte are in for a real treat this year.”

Each of the golf tour’s top four players are now committed to playing here next week: Woods (1), Phil Mickelson (2), Sergio Garcia (3) and Geoff Ogilvy (4).
